We decided to take a short trip from Guatapé to Alejandría, as we saw the really nice new road earlier when we checked out San Rafael. We went to Guatape Motos again and we got a nice, red Yamaha Libero 125. A different one than last time 🙂
We headed towards San Rafael and we saw the new sign and new road going north on the Eastern side of the lake. We were really enjoying the empty road until we found a sign we’ve never seen before.

We thought it’s the usual story, 50 meters of dirt road then pavement again. We couldn’t have been more wrong… 😬 From that point on, we only saw rocks and sand all the way to Alejandría and a couple 4x4s on the side of the road. There were some places where the rain we had the previous night left us with big pools of mud. The wife even asked how I got so confident riding in such conditions.

After an hour more of riding we finally got to a cross road where we were out if the mud and we made it to our destination, a really lovely little Paisa village with a small square and a small church. We stopped there and decided not to go back the same way, let’s go around, the full Alejandría loop is just 6 hours, we’ve made through 1,5-2 already, let’s have the paved road.
Wrong again. 300 meters outside the village we were back to more sand and since the road was next to the river, the mud and the landslides were now constant features of the journey. All the way to Concepción, where it was replaced by the construction of the new road we enjoyed so much at the beginning.
From Concepción we made it to San Vincent quite fast despite the heavier traffic as around 4 p.m. people started heading home from work and school busses were driving around. There we again decided to avoid the dirt road.

This time we were right. We arrived to the highway and went to Marinilla to turn finally towards Guatapé just as it started to get dark. In Colombia it gets dark really fast… In 10 minutes we crossed the town, and we were back on the 35 km serpentine that leads to Guatapé. The oncoming traffic was so heavy even the bikes couldn’t make it through.
A little tired and very cold we arrived to the apartment and took a hot shower and we were already glad we made this tour.
