Finding the perfect gift is always a difficult task, so in this article, I’m going to give you some ideas based on personal experience and a lot of discussion after a long ride with different bikers during my trips. I’m not hiding the fact that as an associate I’m getting a commission from qualifying purchases, but the gift ideas are genuine and will help you protect or entertain your rider friend, kid or spouse.
Rain protection set
Everybody who loves riding knows, that it’s inevitable to get soaking wet in unexpected rain. If your loved one is going for longer trips, it’s almost certain at one time or another the clouds will not be in their favor. This is why this gift is always a good choice to help you protect your rider from the elements.
While there are several options to choose from, I’d like to focus on the two main options that you can evaluate. Two-piece rain set and the rain suit.
The rain set
This seems to be the favored choice for many riders as it’s more modular and riders can dress up according to the level of rain, also, this is the one where you have to be more aware of the rider’s measurements, riding style and gear that they already have.
The rain suit
This is an easier option for a gift, and in general, gives better coverage on the rider. It’s really difficult to fit anything additional under the suit, like a backpack, navigation, etc. On the other hand, it’s much easier to get the right fit for the driver.
Boot and glove cover
Many say it’s a luxury, and I have to admit, covering the gloves and boots seems like a waste of money, but I’ve been on trips where we rode days in lighter or heavier rain, on time even ice, and I was really glad not freezing my fingers off and my boots were dry as well contrary to my fellow riders’, who had the waterproof boots.
Bike maintenance pack
I’ve already made an article about how to clean your motorcycle properly, at this point you’ll need some insight on what your friend already has.
Lubes
Most rider have the basic lube for the chain, but many neglect the rest of the bike as it’s not essential for survival, but in the long run, you can preserve the bike in much better condition. I collected those items that I or my mechanic use on my bike.
Cleaning supplies
You have the full process in this article, but I made a custom link with all the items to make it easier. Every biker loves these, and we always run out of at least one of these.
Mask & gloves
Here we are getting onto a tricky territory.
While masks are generally easy to get, and you can choose so many designs it is almost impossible to get a wrong one.
Gloves, on the other hand, should never be bought without trying on one, make sure you order from a place where they exchange it for a better fit.
Motorcycle bags
After being through so many tours, I can tell you, a good bag can be one of your best friends. If you are planning to travel together, you’ll love them.
Tank bag
This is generally underrated, but a tank bag can save you so many extra stops, it can store your valuables, navigation, papers and so much more. From the tank lock to the magnetic and strap on versions, you can get so many types it’s impossible not to find a good fit. I recommend one that has a waterproof cover and a see-through pocket for your phone, that way you can continue driving while others are busy checking their phones or packing their pockets at the gas station while you just pop the bag and take it with you.
Side and rear bags
It can be scary to learn that not all bags and boxes can make it to all types of bikes, that’s why I recommend checking out the compatible options for your make and model. I personally have two hard saddlebags for the clothes, personal stuff, and a rear box to store the tools, rain suits and other items I might need during the trip.
Action camera
GoPro
Anybody living in this century with all the social media knows how good it feels to upload awesome clips of your ride. Those who prefer security can use a dashcam.
Either way, the waterproof, lifetime warranty GoPro is always a good choice not only for the bike but you can take it to other adventures as well, so the whole family can benefit from this.
Accessories
If you plan to give an action camera it’s always a good idea to add a couple of mounts for the helmet, front, and the bar. You can always go fancy with the anti–shaking and shock protection for better video quality and add a mic if narration or exhaust sound is important for the rider.
Security
Locks
I personally have 2 locks with me and plan to invest for a third one. Generally, a chain with a secure padlock is necessary if the bike is outside overnight, in cities a disk lock is enough for stopping to get some business done. I am buying an additional one for securing the helmets and jackets during a trip if we leave the bikes for a walk, swim or getting a cable car to the top of the mountain.
GPS tracker
Some say it’s a luxury to add one to the bike, but I think it has many advantages. First you can make sure you the bike is found whenever needed, and second the location can be shared with the ones at home.
On top of that you can buy some that has automatic detection of an accident and alert the authorities immediately.
Helmet
A helmet is an extension of the bike and the rider. Unfortunately, I have seen people with expensive cruisers arrive in poor quality helmets. This is a number one protection for the rider and as such a perfect fit should be ensured.
In terms of design, you can go crazy or consult with your friend.
In terms of structure, make sure chin protection is included and the helmet matches the style of the bike.
Communication and navigation
In the recent years this area developed the most. From the heavy, pocket devices nowadays all can be mounted to the helmet, many has phone integration and some even projects to the plexi.
In general, I only have two pieces of advice here, don’t let it be distracting and if riding buddies already have one, try to get a compatible version.
New tires
This is a delicate topic and most rider have their own preference, luckily it’s printed on the side of the tires. During a good season the tires can wear off and starting the new season with a new set is increasing the safety for the rider.
Training bike
Of course, this is a really expensive option, but many riders dream of exploring different riding styles and options. Getting the family behind and buying a track bike or an ATV can help the rider experience different riding conditions and be more prepared during the usual rides. Not to mention how fun it is with a new type of bike. An added benefit is to have a spare one if a mechanic is working on the main one or if a friend is coming over.
+1 Think of your passenger
Last Christmas I installed gel in our seats and it was the greatest thing during this season. It’s more comfortable for the rider, the passenger, so if you plan to go along this is a gift for you as well. This increased our daily range by 25% and we did not feel any discomfort at the end of the day.
